A Monthly Tax Preparation Checklist for Small Businesses

Build a repeatable routine instead of rushing to collect records at the end of each reporting period.

Build a repeatable routine instead of rushing to collect records at the end of each reporting period.

Agree on the reporting period

Choose the start and end dates and note who is responsible for gathering and reviewing the records. Capture any account or entity changes for that period.

Collect your source records

Gather issued and received invoices, credit notes, supporting receipts, bank statements, and explanations for unusual movements.

Check totals and exceptions

Compare the invoice register with banking activity, check for duplicate records, and keep unmatched items in an exception list.

Prepare the review package

Create a summary of totals, open questions, missing documentation, and the person who approved each adjustment. Keep the source files alongside it.

Confirm your deadlines

Review the relevant current official calendar and consult your adviser for obligations that apply to your specific taxpayer profile. Do not assume deadlines are the same for every RIF.
